Pedestrian Safety Measures For Tooting Broadway

Transport for London is planning a £5m makeover for Tooting Broadway to improve safety and revitalise the streetscape. There will be a major junction scheme at the Mitcham Road and Garratt Lane intersection, with new with straight-across crossings and more space for pedestrians.

Other measures include eight new signalised pedestrian crossings and central reservations in Mitcham Road, Tooting High Street and Upper Tooting Road to provide a stopping point for people crossing the road. More space will be provided by pavement widening and areas of green.

One very welcome proposal is the relocation of the bus stand from Longmead Road. Traffic calming measures include a 20mph limit for Tooting High Street and Mitcham Road and inset loading bays to assist traffic flow.

Cllr. Andy Gibbons said: ‘Residents in Graveney have been raising these issues with us for a long time so  it’s good to see that TfL is taking action.’

The scheme will be subject to public consultation, with a target of 2019 for completion. A full copy of the plan is here: Tooting Action Plan
